4. Quizzes

There are three types of quizzes in Accelerated Reader:


RPQ_labelReading Practice Quizzes – measure literal comprehension, so a teacher knows if a student has actually read and understood the book

These quizzes are either 5, 10 or 20 questions in length

Each student sees the same questions, though the answer is randomised to reduce copying amongst students

If the student has recently read a book from within their reading range, they will pass the quiz

LSQ_LabelLiteracy Skills Quizzes – measure the student’s reading abilities against 24 literacy skills, beyond the basic literal comprehension, into higher order thinking skills in the context of the entire book

Each quiz contains 36 questions across the following domains:

Initial Understanding – Literary Analysis – Inferential Comprehension – Constructing Meaning

VPQ_Label

Vocabulary Practice Quizzes – explicitly develop and assess students’ vocabulary from the books they read.  Students regularly using Accelerated Reader complete lots of reading practice which can now be extended to explicitly teach new vocabulary.  Key important words they read are tested in a Vocabulary Practice Quiz using a structured model for comprehensive vocabulary development.
