Accelerated Reader is a Reading Practice Management and Motivation Tool.
Every skill requires practice for improvement and reading is a skill that requires lots of practice. To become a successful reader each student must spend some time actually reading. Silent reading may be called Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) or Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading (USSR) or simply Independent Reading. Accelerated Reader fits nicely into this part of your reading program.
You need to keep the instructional program. You need to explicitly teach students to read, you need to keep the guided reading, the literacy circles, and the grammar and spelling lessons. Accelerated Reader does not replace any of these components. It adds to the Independent Reading component and becomes a part of a balanced reading program. AR helps a teacher match books to the student’s comprehension capability so that their silent reading is successful practice.
AR, as a additional tool in your reading program, aims to help your students achive:
- More reading practice
- Reading success
= Reading motivation
